Chapter Thirteen

Isabel stood at the window and watched the sunrise crest. The house had aged but it remained lovely. Not surprisingly, it was laid out as Devin had described. As she ran her fingertips over the curtains, Isabel couldn’t help but feel an attachment. Why, she couldn’t be certain. Maybe because she knew she oversaw its building. Or maybe because she supposedly haunted it for so long. Either way, there existed a definite mental connection… perhaps even physical.

“You really are stunning,” Devin said softly.

Turning, she found him leaning against the doorway, hair wet and brushed back. His come-hither eyes roamed her face. Isabel’s heart caught in her throat. As with the house, Isabel felt an inexplicable connection to him.

In fact, she could easily believe that they fall in love.

“Thank you.” Isabel smiled. She had to admit, the ‘shower’ had felt wonderful. And the soaps and shampoos Andrea had given her to use, amazing! Regrettably, she’d had to put her dress back on instead of trying on one of the more current fashions. She’d worn pants before and the idea of doing so again held great appeal. But it turned out that they might travel back in time unexpectedly so best to remain dressed for the period.

Isabel breathed deeply when Devin joined her at the window. He smelled fresh and soapy, masculine. Gazing up, she once more lost herself in the grayish green swirls of his eyes. Without thought, she reached up and touched the side of his face. So smooth.

“Freshly shaved,” he murmured. “Not a look you’ve seen a lot of.”

“I really am sorry about the way I treated you at the river. I was so scared. Still am. There’s so much… happening.”

“Water under the bridge. This situation’s tough all the way around.” He smiled and winked. “But no more spitting in the face, okay?”

Nodding, it occurred to her she didn’t have to play the part she’d perfected. Isabel was no innocent school girl. Devin was from a time that was obviously far less strict. She wanted to embrace the real her… the real him. They were courting after all, weren’t they? Isabel cupped his other cheek and pulled his lips down to hers. When his mouth slanted and his arms snaked around her waist, Isabel melted. His kiss felt so different from Lucas’.

Far better.

When their tongues meshed and he pressed her hips against his, Isabel felt a sharp surge of desire. Devin’s low groan told her he felt the same.

“Breakfast’s ready. Oops!” Andrea vanished from the doorway the moment she appeared.

Isabel smiled and broke the kiss. “I like her. She’s nice. I probably should be embarrassed she caught us like this but I’m not. It’s strange.”

Nuzzling her neck, Devin offered a haphazard grunt of agreement or disagreement. She couldn’t tell. His lips against her neck and his arousal pressed against her belly stole all thought. It had been far too long since she’d had a man.

Lucas.

His name brought sour thoughts and she pulled away. “We should go eat. Something tells me I’m about to taste food beyond my wildest imagination.
